Plasmid, außerhalb des Bakterienchromosoms bei Protocyten in Ein- oder Mehrzahl im Cytoplasma liegendes kleines, ringförmiges DNA-Molekül, das ebenfalls genetische Information enthält und sich autonom repliziert. Ein P. kann z.B. Resistenzgene gegen Antibiotika (R-P.) oder Gene, die die Konjugation von Zellen ermöglichen (F-P.), enthalten. Durch Konjugation können R-P. auf ursprünglich nicht resistente Bakterienstämme übertragen werden. Diese vererben dann ihre erworbene Resistenz, was bei krankheitserregenden Bakterien die medizinische Bekämpfung sehr erschwert. P. haben als Vektoren große Bedeutung für die Gentechnik. P. wurden innerhalb der Eukaryoten bisher nur bei Hefe und einigen Pflanzen nachgewiesen.
